S-Video

S-Video has long been the cable of choice for 'hi-band' video sources, but is now being overtaken by the likes of Component Video and the newer full digital alternatives. The "S" in S-video stands for Separate, not Super as is often thought. 'Separate Video' was the high quality connectivity choice on early hi-band video, of which Super VHS became the dominant alternative, hence the connection with the word Super.

S-Video is comprised of two channels - "Y" for Luminance - the black and white image; and "C" for Chrominance - the color information. The four pins in an S-Video plug/socket are for the positives and respective negatives of these two components. S-Video is a big step up from Composite video because it keeps these vital elements separate (hence the name). Information can be smeared in Composite Video as these components are merged into one cable, causing some interferences which result in a reduction of sharpness and also color bleeding. S-Video on the other hand keeps the image sharp and clear.
