Frequently Asked Questions

audio cables

We have answered some of the questions we receive around speaker cables and audio interconnects.

Can I use the Vortex as a subwoofer cable or the Master LFE as a stereo interconnect?

In truth, we actually often get asked which is better. In actual listening tests we have found both these cables to be excellent for both. However the Vortex does bring out more highs and the Master LFE more lows.

Do both speaker cables need to be the same length?

No. Definitely not. Although there is a measurable difference there is no audible difference within reason. For example a 3m and 5m length cannot be heard, a 50m and 2m can be, just.

What is Bi-Wiring?

Some speakers have two sets of input terminals, two black and two red. Using the Master 2.4 or the Vortex cable both these connections can be connected to a single output of an amp. The benefits of bi-wiring tend to vary dependant on the amp and speakers. So whilst in theory bi-wiring should always be beneficial in practice the difference may be subtle. Check with your speaker manufacturer on this.

What is Bi-Amping?

Similar to Bi-Wiring Except that the amplifier also has two outputs or two matching amps are used. Produces very positive results..

Should I use a mono subwoofer cable or the y-adaptor to plug into both left and right channels?

Most subwoofers give you a choice of a mono or stereo (actually dual mono) connection. Using the stereo connection should make no impact on the sound quality, in theory. However it will normally increase the signal by 3db which is audible to the human ear. This increase can easily be adjusted in most home theatre amps or the sub. The actual quality of the sound from the subwoofer won't change.
NOTE: There are a small number of subs that require both channels to be connected for their auto-on function to work, always read your manuals.

Can i use silver plated or pure silver cables for audio?

Silver is a better conductor then copper so in theory it should provide better sound for both interconnects and speaker cable. In actual listening silver produces a very clear and crisp sound. Initial listening of silver plated or pure silver cables appear excellent. Further listening with silver though shows the sound to be overly bright and not quite natural, the end result is 'listening fatigue' whereby the sound starts to become harsh this is particulary noticable in the higher frequencies, female vocals and such.
